Brisbane International Students arrival day!

It’s my birthday first of all! Wish the sun would come out then it’d feel like it.

No rest for me though, today is International Student Day in Brisbane as we welcome 3,500 of them to the city to start the new year here.

I’ll be giving a quick speech to them all telling them why it’s such a great place to live, and I don’t have to lie!

I feel safe here, I can keep my fitness training going in outdoor pools and on the cycle and running tracks, I’ve just found a new place to live in West End and the sun shines for 300 days of every year – we just haven’t seen it for a week or so!

Anjaan, one of the Best Job finalists arrived in the city yesterday so we’re hitting the town together tonight and can’t wait.

Just had a chance to catch up with one of Australias famous faces, Michael Kasprovich. He played cricket for the Green Caps and humiliated English batters for years!

So what were you doing before the Best Job??

It’s one of the questions that loads of the journalists I’ve spoken to have wanted to find the answer to.

It’s also a little bit of a different answer to that which most people would imagine and one of adventure and achieving a dream.

After I’d visited Africa for the first time back in 1997 something inside of me had changed. I’d lost the desire to sit in an office working as a Automotive Engineer, the subject which I’d studied at university and I’d been infected by the need to travel. To get out of the UK and learn as much as I could about other people, other ways of life and other countries.

Afritrex became my goal and my next big challenge; combining the dream of driving around the outside of the African continent taking on some serious physical challenges and raising lots of money for charity.

When I sat down with Richard Fidler in the ABC studios in Brisbane, it was this past that he wanted to find out all about. For half an hour I whittled on about goals, dreams and challenges…

Tokyo’s skyline

The view from the 27th floor of the Shangri-La hotel in Tokyo.

After a two hour Bullet Train ride from Osaka I’ve arrived back in the capital to make a presentation to the Chambers of Commerce here all about the Best Job.

Stayed up too late last night watching the Winter Olympics and replying to emails so feeling shattered.

Time for a double espresso me thinks!
